This painting evolved from an interview with a partially sighted person living with Macular Degeneration.
“I often see irregular shapes, like this morning when I got up, I saw these black shapes on the wall, rather like lace, and I went over, but then there was nothing there.”
Macular degeneration:
Macular degeneration is a condition that affects the central area of the retina at the back of the eye. It normally affects people over the age of 50. There are two different types; Dry macular degeneration causing a gradual loss of central vision. Wet macular degeneration causes a sudden loss of central vision. Often people experience dark or blurred patches in their vision and struggle to recognise people’s faces.
